Help to vulnerable on Lesvos wins Efi Latsoudi 2016 Nansen Award

Efi Latsoudi doesn’t keep fresh milk at home. With so much time spent helping refugees, there’s never chance to use it. “It’s dried, I hope that’s okay,” she says, apologetically, stirring powder into coffee.
Efi Latsoudi named as one of two winners of the 2016 Nansen Refugee Award for her tireless work helping refugees on the Greek island of Lesvos.

Trafficking of Nigerian women into prostitution in Europe 'at crisis level'

The trafficking of Nigerian women from Libya to Italy by boat is reaching “crisis” levels, with traffickers using migrant reception centres as holding pens for women who are then collected and forced into prostitution across Europe.
UN says 80% of the Nigerian women who came to Italy by boat in the first half of 2016 will be trafficked into prostitution. read more

Passeurs d’hospitalites – The Newsletter

Migrants in Calais and at the borders, July 19 to August 14 2016
Summer 2015 - summer 2016: the number of migrants has tripled in Calais; evictions
evacuations, squats and camps destructions follow each other on the coast and inland, in Paris,
at the Italian border; the device of "respite centers" become Centers of Reception and
Orientation, enters in duration and develops, as a means to disperse the people rather than solve
the problems where they arise; the walls multiply, also deaths. In silence: this summer, migrants
are not attractive anymore.

Trapped in transit

Refugees, migrants and asylum seekers locked up in Libya.
Since Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) launched search and rescue operations in the central Mediterranean Sea last year, its teams have rescued more than 25,000 people from boats in distress. Regardless of their country of origin or their reasons for trying to reach European shores, almost everyone rescued from this stretch of water passed through Libya.

Aufnahmebedingungen in Italien

Search and Rescue in the Mediterranean Sea: Negotiating Political Differences

This article explores the debates that unfolded within Me´decins Sans Frontie`res (MSF) around the decision to launch search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean in 2015. It examines how, beyond the unifying imperative to help, there remained very different political interpretations within the organisation about the
proper role of humanitarian actors in tackling this visible and tragic situation. read more

A sea of struggle – activist border interventions in the Mediterranean Sea

The article shows how the Alarm Phone’s (digital) presence in the Mediterranean
allows activists to listen to and amplify the political struggles that are fought by travelling
subjects at sea. Through their interventions in real-time, the activists are able to contest
the ways in which the sea is rendered a space of ‘nature’ or one of ‘sovereign prerogative’,
highly undemocratic and difficult to access for non-state, non-commercial and non-security
actors. The Alarm Phone takes part in the ‘in/visible struggles of migration’ (Ataç et al. 2015)
both by facilitating unauthorised human mobility and by engaging in public campaigns
to denounce border atrocities. read more
