Call to Action - Sarost 5

July 26, 2018
It has been two weeks now and the 40 people on board of Sarost 5 are still stranded at sea. The Tunisian Red Crescent visited the boat and reported that two pregnant women were in dire need of medical attention and would have to be disembarked immediately. Malta is stalling and still not stepping up to its duty mandated by international law to provide a safe harbour on its land when it fails to find a safe harbour elsewhere. Press Release on the Sarost 5 Disembarkation Announcement

Watch the Med Alarm Phone has been in regular contact with crew members as well as rescued people of the Sarost 5 since the first distress call that took place in the Maltese SAR zone on Friday 13.07.18. The 40 rescued people have been at sea for more than two weeks. The rescued people and the crew of the supply vessel Sarost 5 have been stationed off the port of Zarzis since Monday 16.07.18 and have endured unbearable living conditions on board. We are relieved that the Tunisian government will let the people disembark for ‘humanitarian reasons’. However, we remain extremely concerned about the following points.

“Without Education They Lose Their Future”

“Leila,” 11, and her sister “Magdoulin,” 12, have never been inside a classroom. Growing up in war-torn Syria, the only education the sisters, originally from Aleppo, had before fleeing their country six years ago was a private tutor during the two years they were displaced to Idlib province. “I want to become a doctor,” Leila told Human Rights Watch. “Other children can go to school while we don’t and that makes me sad.” read more

MIGRATION FLOWS TO EUROPE -QUARTERLY OVERVIEW

According to the new monitoring data from IOM, there were 18,956 new arrivals to Italy, Spain,
Cyprus, Greece and Bulgaria in the first quarter of 2018. This represents almost a 50% decrease compared to the same period last
year when 34,531 arrivals were reported. The decrease is mainly related to the drop in arrivals in Italy. read more

Within and outside: Europe closes itself off

The observations and information present in this report originate from field missions conducted at the internal borders (France with its neighboring countries) and the external borders of the Schengen area (Hungary/Serbia and the Mediterranean) in 2017 and 2018. The contents of the report have also been supplied by monitoring work, documentary research, and analysis carried out since 2015 by La Cimade on the mechanisms and decisions relative to the surveillance of the internal and external borders of Europe. read more

Libya: where thugs are funded by Europe to mistreat migrants

The deals cut between the European Union and Libya since the early 2000s demonstrate how the policy of externalisation of borders operates: all concessions, compromises and infringements of international conventions will be permitted for the sake of “exercising control over migratory flows”. Colonel Gaddafi was thus able to use migrants as bargaining chips with which to blackmail his counterparts, in order to carve out a place for himself amongst the community of nations. His downfall seems to have made orphans of European policy-makers. Eager to find new border guards, the latter are ready to fund the jailors of migrants detained in camps or thrown into the sea. In the autumn of 2017, the “modern slavery” that had long been condemned by human rights defenders was
revealed for the world to see in images broadcast on CNN. The French President, Emmanuel Macron, then decried these “Crimes against Humanity”. There is no doubt that crimes are being committed against individuals who are prevented from exercising their right to emigrate. First amongst these are the crimes perpetrated by the European authorities, which condemn thousands of would-be migrants to die at sea or pushes them back to Libya. read more

Over 2000 Alarm Phone Cases - No Reason for Celebration

The report reflects, among others, on the developments in three regions of the Mediterranean Sea, the remarkable rise in crossings to Spain, the escalation around the question of disembarkation in Italy, as well as the ‘Palermo Process’ – the attempt to build new corridors of solidarity so desperately needed in times of the right-wing tide. read more

THE EU-TURKEY STATEMENT AND THE GREEK HOTSPOTS

The European Union agreement with Turkey turns refugees into prisoners on the Greek islands and asylum procedures in the hotspots violate the rule of law and international law. This is the conclusion of the authors of a new study commissioned by the Greens/EFA Group. For the first time, the lawyers shed light on violations of rights in asylum procedures. The adoption of the hotspot concept in the future Common European Asylum System (GEAS) would represent a significant step backwards for European democracy, the rule of law and solidarity.

Migrationsprofiteure?

Expanding the fortress

This report seeks to shine a spotlight on the policies that underpin this externalisation of Europe’s borders, the agreements that have been signed, the corporations and entities that profit, and the consequences for forcibly displaced people as well as the countries and populations that host them. It is the third in a series titled Border Wars that have examined Europe’s border policies and shown how the arms and security industry has helped shape European border security policies and have then reaped the rewards for ever more border security measures and contracts. read more
