Sudan - The forgotten War
Seit zwei Jahren dauert der Krieg im Sudan nun schon an. In den lokalen Medien werden die gestohlene Revolution, das Leid der Zivilbevölkerung und die humanitäre Selbsthilfe angesichts fehlender internationaler Hilfe kaum erwähnt. Borderline-europe - Menschenrechte ohne Grenzen hat in Zusammenarbeit mit der Evangelischen Akademie in Berlin zum Jahrestag des Kriegsausbruchs eine Veranstaltung organisiert, um auf die Kriegsverbrechen und Menschenrechtsverletzungen im Sudan und auf den Fluchtrouten hinzuweisen. Borderline-europe arbeitet zusammen mit dem Africa Center for Justice and Peace Studies an der Dokumentation von Menschenrechtsverbrechen und Kriegsverbrechen im Sudan. Diese Broschüre spiegelt einen Teil unserer Diskussion über Transitional Justice im Sudan, über Möglichkeiten der Versöhnung und Täter zur Rechenschaft zu ziehen.

Conclusion: The conflict in Sudan has resulted in mass atrocities, including genocide, sexual violence, slavery, enforced disappearances, and starvation tactics. Despite international condemnation, the crimes continue into 2025. Immediate and decisive action is required from the United Nations, African Union, and International Criminal Court to halt these violations and bring perpetrators to justice.

- Sexual violence in conflict zones and along migration routes. Many arrive already pregnant from rape
- Criminalisation of abortion even in cases of rape à unsafe abortions with risk of infection, infertility, death
- Challenges reporting cases of rape to the authorities
- Suspension of UNHCR health services due to funding crisis
- No state-run psychological support system
Impact of the war on migrants and refugees in Sudan
- Ethiopians and Eritreans among the first victims of violence when the war broke out
- Majority of migrants was unable to flee from Sudan
Criminalisation of migrants
- Fate of many young Sudanese people who try to reach Europe for safety and to provide for their families is exemplified with the case of Emmanuel A. (18): Was forced to perform tasks on the vessel crossing into Europe, arrested in Greece with smuggling charges, currently in pre-trial detention. Many others in similar situations have been sentenced to life imprisonment and millions of euros in fines.
Situation of women & self-empowering initiatives
- The serious impact of an armed conflict on women and gendered violence are often ignored and hence not taken serious by policy makers, legislators and even native leaders.
