Italian leaders hit back at accusations of police racism and homophobia
A new report by the Council of Europe's human rights body has accused the Italian police of racist and homophobic abuse, particularly against the Roma community and people of African descent. The report highlights racial profiling, verbal and physical abuse and discriminatory practices in asylum procedures. It criticises Italy's failure to tackle racism and police accountability. Italian leaders, including Prime Minister Meloni and President Mattarella, rejected the allegations and defended the police.
