EU disagrees on asylum and migration

The disagreements in the area of asylum and migration policy within the EU remain present. Although an agreement was reached in June on the so-called solidarity mechanism, it is voluntary and not all EU member states participate in the mechanism in the same way. The idea is to relieve especially countries in the south of the EU and to distribute refugees throughout the EU. However, some states only support the solidarity mechanism with money and personnel. There is also much criticism of the screening regulation, which provides for people who do not meet the requirements for entry to be subjected to identification and security checks at the external borders. The upcoming Italian elections in September will also have a major impact on the issue. For example, election favorite Giorgia Meloni of the post-fascist Fratelli d'Italia is planning a naval blockade off the coasts of North Africa. read more
