Hungary has arguably the harshest isolation policy in the EU, in violation of European and international law. Since the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled in 2020 that detaining people at the Röszke border crossing was unlawful detention, Hungary has closed the transit zones - but it also effectively abolished the right to asylum.
