The Italian organization "Medici per i Diritti Umani" (MEDU) has recently published a report with more than a hundred testimonies by refugees on readmissions from Italia's adria harbours to Greece. Each year, several thousand refugees arrive from Greece at the harbours of Venice, Ancona, Bari or Brindisi and get readmitted without individual case examination on the basis of a treaty between the two states. read more

Le 25 mars 2011, un bateau quittait Tripoli avec à son bord 72 migrants fuyant la guerre et espérant rejoindre l'Italie. En panne de moteur, l'embarcation a dérivé avant d'être repérée et approchée par un ou deux hélicoptères militaires puis un bâtiment de marine militaire. L'un après l'autre sont repartis sans remplir leur obligation de secours, laissant à l'abandon, en mer, les migrants dont 63 mourront de faim et de soif. En avril 2012, quatre survivants réussirent à déposer plainte auprès du procureur de la République de Paris pour omission de porter secours à personne en péril - sans effets. Une nouvelle plainte avec constitution de partie civile est alors déposée entre les mains du doyen des juges d'instruction. read more

Das EU-Parlament will der Grenzschutzagentur Frontex erlauben, Flüchtlingsboote auf hoher See direkt zurückzuschleppen. Die Boote sollen auch in internationalen Gewässern gestoppt, durchsucht und sogar zurückgeschleppt werden dürfen. Grundlage dafür ist ein Entwurf der EU-Kommission zur Neuregelung der Überwachung der See-Außengrenzen. Er erweitert die Befugnisse von Frontex erheblich. read more

On 25. November 2013 the Five-Member Naval Court of Piraeus found two out of three accused coast guards guilty for having committed acts of torture against an asylum seeker, including restricting the victim's breathing so as to simulate drowning and suffocation ('wet and dry submarino'), carrying out mock execution, as well as other serious attacks on human dignity, immediately after the victim's entry into Greece and during his transfer with other asylum-seekers to the Port of Chios. The above-mentioned incident was first documented in the report entitled “The truth may be bitter but it must be told – The Situation of Refugees in the Aegean and the Practices of the Greek Coast Guard” by the Group of Lawyers for the Rights of Refugees and Migrants and the NGO Pro-Asyl, which was published in 2007 and has attracted extensive publicity ever since. read more

Two coast guard officers were found guilty and one cleared on Tuesday of torturing Moroccan migrants on Chios in 2007. The navy tribunal handed the two men suspended jail sentences of three and six years. One of their two victims appeared in court and said he was subjected to waterboarding and fake executions. “We applaud this decision and we hope that it will act as a deterrent against criminal behavior toward refugees and immigrants of which members of the coast guard have been accused in the past,” said the Group of Lawyers for the Rights of Refugees and Migrants. The abuse of the migrants was first brought to light by the German-based nongovernmental organization Pro Asyl. read more
