On 21 May 2025, the Italian Constitutional Court will hear for the first time a controversial law that imposes sanctions on civilian sea rescuers in the Mediterranean - among other things for allegedly not following instructions from the Libyan coastguard. Human Rights Watch and ECCHR have submitted statements in which they emphasise that the law violates international law, in particular the Non-Refoulment-Principle to countries such as Libya. Refugees there are at risk of serious human rights violations. The decision could have far-reaching consequences for the protection of human rights at Europe's external borders. read more

Contrary to the general trend of falling migration numbers to the European Union, the English Channel is seeing an increase in crossings. This is confirmed by figures published by the EU border agency Frontex last week. In the first four months of this year, more than 18,000 people attempted to cross the strait, which is only 30 kilometres narrow at one point but dangerous due to the many ship movements - an increase of five per cent compared to the same period last year. read more

There are places in this world where law protects you like a second skin. It walks with you into offices, hospitals, airports, schools, police stations. It makes people speak gently to you. It ensures that your name is recorded properly, that your body is not touched without your consent. But for others, law vanishes at the moment of arrival. read more

For years, NGOs have denounced Bulgaria’s human rights violations - from pushbacks and detention to physical and psychological abuse. Yet, European states continue to deport people there under the false premise that it is a ‘safe’ country. A new report by No Name Kitchen exposes systematic human rights violations: People face homelessness, lack of medical care, abuse in overcrowded detention centers, and coercion into signing “voluntary” return agreements. The report highlights not only Bulgaria’s role but also the broader complicity of EU states in a deportation system that disregards basic human rights. read more
