2015 marked a turning point. From the tragedies of Lampedusa to the mass journeys along the Balkan route, and Merkel's suspension of the Dublin Regulation, Europe faced an unprecedented influx of asylum seekers. Almost 900,000 arrived in Germany alone. But what began with solidarity soon collided with fear: the Paris terror attacks and the New Year’s assaults in German cities fueled media frenzy and a feeling of insecurity.
