Starting in July 2027, Greece will assume the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU for half a year. The Greek government has now announced plans to establish a European Return Hub in Africa during this period. These centers are intended to house asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected in the EU but who cannot be deported yet to their country of origin. Italy’s Return Hubs in Albania, which are continuously criticized for criminalizing migration and their human rights violating housing conditions, supposedly serve as a model for this initiative. Following talks with Rwanda earlier this summer, a country has reportedly already been selected. read more

Officials in Greece have arrested two teenagers in recent days on suspicion of manning refugee vessels coming over from Libya. Both of the youths were identified as underage minors.
