The Italian government has extended border controls at its air and sea borders with Spain for another 15 days. Italian Foreign Minister Piantedosi cites alleged risks to Italy’s internal security as the reason for this decision. This is already the third extension of the suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain. Italy had taken these measures after tens of thousands of migrants arrived in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta at the end of July. The reintroduction of border controls within the Schengen Area is permitted only under certain conditions, namely when a state’s internal security is particularly threatened. Since Spain and Italy do not share a land border, the controls are limited to air and sea borders. read more

Confidential talks between the EU and the Taliban on the repatriation of Afghan migrants have drawn sharp criticism. Human rights organisations are warning against giving the regime greater political legitimacy and highlighting the dangers that deported Afghans would face in their country of origin. Whilst Europe seeks to curb migration pressures, this rapprochement with the Taliban raises fundamental questions regarding human rights, international law and the EU’s future migration policy. read more

While the EU is taking steps to make its migration policy more restrictive with its recently unveiled five-point plan, the humanitarian situation of the thousands of people who have arrived in Ceuta continues to deteriorate. Following their visit of the Spanish exclave off the coast of Morocco, the two Members of the European Parliament, Estrella Galán (GUE/NGL) and Mélissa Camara (Greens/EFA), strongly condemned the conditions there and the EU’s inaction. According to the two members of parliament, the EU is blocking the transfer of people from Ceuta to the Spanish mainland. However, reports indicate that there is sufficient capacity within Spanish reception facilities to provide their protection. read more

Starting in July 2027, Greece will assume the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU for half a year. The Greek government has now announced plans to establish a European Return Hub in Africa during this period. These centers are intended to house asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected in the EU but who cannot be deported yet to their country of origin. Italy’s Return Hubs in Albania, which are continuously criticized for criminalizing migration and their human rights violating housing conditions, supposedly serve as a model for this initiative. Following talks with Rwanda earlier this summer, a country has reportedly already been selected. read more
