After rescuing 22 people yesterday evening, a German sailing boat was prohibited from leaving the port of Lampedusa. The crew is accused of not informing the so-called Libyan coast guard when they rescued the people from an unseaworthy boat. The detention is expected to last for 10-20 days. An overcrowded rubber dighy ran into bad weather crossing the Mediterranean Sea, a German NGO reported on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of three sisters who had escaped war-torn Sudan. Volunteers from the organization RESQSHIP found the bodies of the three, aged 9, 11, and 17 years old. They were part of a group of 65 refugees who left Libya on Friday night in the battered vessel, hoping to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa. read more

Italy hailed a drop in irregular arrivals last year as proof its migration policies are working. One boat’s journey shows the dangers of the crackdown.The crossing from North Africa to Italy or the island nation of Malta is one of the busiest routes into the European Union. It accounts for over a quarter of the more than 240,000 unauthorized arrivals detected last year, according to the EU border agency, Frontex. It is also one of the world’s most deadly maritime crossings, IOM says. After a crackdown by European governments and partners in North Africa, irregular maritime crossings to the EU fell by more than a third last year, Frontex data shows, driven by a sharp drop in arrivals via the central Mediterranean. read more
