After seven years, the abusive prosecution of humanitarian workers in Lesbos ended with an acquittal. In August 2018, police on Lesbos arrested Sara Mardini and Séan Binder, who spent more than 100 days in pre-trial detention. Two Greek nationals were also arrested. The public prosecutor's office ultimately charged 24 people with aiding and abetting illegal migration and other criminal offenses. On January 15, 2026, a court in Lesbos acquitted all defendants of the charges brought by the public prosecutor's office. read more
