Germany plans to admit up to four additional Taliban diplomats to speed up passport issuance for deportations and enable up to three charter flights per month to Afghanistan. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt confirmed to the Tagesspiegel that technical-level talks are ongoing with Taliban representatives. PRO ASYL described the deportations as a violation of the international non-refoulement principle, given the risk of torture or inhuman treatment upon return to Afghanistan. Greens MP Marcel Emmerich called it a scandal that the federal government is making itself an accomplice of a regime internationally recognised as a terrorist actor. read more

Since June, federal states have been able to house, in centralised facilities, people whose asylum cases fall under the jurisdiction of another EU Member State or who have already been granted protection there. Saxony has had such a centre since 1 July – which, according to the state itself, is the largest in Germany. The Saxony Refugee Council describes these secondary migration centres as prison-like facilities. read more

On 3 July, the Sea-Watch 5 departed for a rescue mission in the central Mediterranean for the first time since it was fired upon in May. At the same time, Sea-Watch filed an urgent application with the Berlin Administrative Court seeking to oblige the German government to take effective measures to protect the Sea-Watch 5 and its crew. The danger facing the Sea-Watch 5 is not an isolated case. It is directly linked to a policy through which Germany and the EU have for years politically, financially and operationally supported the so-called Libyan Coast Guard – despite its documented violence against people seeking protection. read more

El Obeid is currently the frontline city in Sudan’s war. Bloody attacks by the RSF militia are on the rise. The UN has warned of mass atrocities affecting hundreds of thousands of people. The taz analyses how migration has driven a wedge between Italy's right-wing government and the Vatican. After Trump attacked Pope Leo XIV as too liberal and weak, Meloni publicly defended the Pope, prompting Trump to end their friendship. Only eleven percent of Italians now view Trump positively, with approval even among right-wing voters at just 16 percent, making the political calculation behind Meloni's repositioning unmistakable. read more

Berlin remains the only one of 14 German states that agreed to introduce the Bezahlkarte but has still not done so, despite the original implementation date of early 2026 having passed. The regional government of Spain's Canary Islands has expressed concern about the effects of the full implementation of the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. Questions remain on how expedited deportations under the laws will affect adults and unaccompanied minors differently amid a perceived overall lack of guidance from Madrid on the proper enforcement of the changes. This comes after the first group of migrants was taken into detention under the new EU-law. read more

A growing number of Syrian nationals are losing their protection status in Germany. According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), the main reason for this is an intensified review of asylum cases involving Syrians with criminal records. This change in policy direction marks a notable departure from Germany's previous policy of not sending anyone back to Syria during the war, though many experts agree that the country is not yet ready to be fully considered a safe country of origin. read more
