The EU Asylum Pact restricts access to asylum in Europe, lowers fundamental rights guarantees for people seeking asylum and keeps those in need of protection at the EU's external borders, so ECRE in a statement published on 10 June 2026, two days before the Pact enters force. Many Member States have chosen a partial implementation approach, focusing on punitive measures and going beyond the Pact's requirements on detention, while simultaneously ignoring fundamental rights obligations and failing to invest in safeguards for children and vulnerable people. ECRE confirms that Pact implementation is proving challenging and deeply uneven across Europe. read more

As the first head of the Church ever to address the Spanish Parliament, Pope Leo XIV spoke on 8 June with flight, migration and human dignity forming a central focus of his historic address. Leo XIV. had already advised Spain's bishops in November to distance themselves clearly from the country's far right, who relentlessly attack the government's migration policy and on the Canary Islands he met displaced people in person. All parliamentary factions gave the speech a standing ovation, a rare moment of unity in a deeply divided country. read more

While EU leaders celebrate the Pact as historic progress, civil society organisations worldwide warn that it amounts to a recipe for human rights abuses and the flouting of international law, particularly through the externalisation of asylum and migration policy beyond EU borders. The Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights and numerous NGOs warn that extended detention is being normalised as a default response, with over 200 organisations having already jointly protested in advance. Amnesty International stated that the Pact "will set back European asylum law for decades to come." read more

Just ahead of the EU Migration and Asylum Pact's entry into force on 12 June 2026, World Politics Review analyses the serious human rights concerns raised by civil society and human rights organisations since the pact was adopted in 2024. Central to the critique is the EU's increasing policy of externalising asylum processing to its external borders and to third countries. Human Rights Watch documented in its World Report 2026 that EU funding of security apparatus in countries with poor human rights records has led to more deaths at sea, unlawful pushbacks, and the return of asylum seekers to countries where they face abuse. read more

Three Somali Geflüchtete have won a case before the Berlin Administrative Court after being turned back to Poland at Frankfurt (Oder) station despite requesting asylum. The court ruled that Germany is obliged under EU law to first determine which member state is responsible for processing an asylum claim before any return is lawful. Despite the ruling, Interior Minister Dobrindt has continued the pushback policy — tens of thousands have since been turned back, including at least 1,200 people seeking protection. read more
