Both countries have pledged to provide temporary shelter for thousands of Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrants stranded at sea, on condition that the international community resettles or repatriates them within a year. Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand had sparked growing international outrage for driving off boats overloaded with exhausted and dying migrants from Bangladesh and from Myanmar's ethnic Rohingya minority. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott says helping resettle the wave of migrants fleeing to Southeast Asia would worsen the problem and "encourage people to get on boats". "Nope, nope, nope," he added when questioned by reporters about whether he would offer resettlement to the migrants from Myanmar's oppressed Muslim Rohingya minority and Bangladesh. Frankreich ist offiziell gegen die Einführung von "Flüchtlingsquoten" auf europäischem Niveau, fordert aber eine "gerechtere Verteilung" von Flüchtlingen in der EU. In Bezug auf die Aufnahme von Flüchtlingen unterscheiden sich zwei Daten: die Zahl der Asylbewerber und zum anderen die Zuteilungsrate der Flüchtlinge. Es wurde zum Beispiel berechnet, dass bei einer globalen Verteilung von Flüchtlingen, Deutschland 18% mehr Asylbewerber aufnehmen müsste, Frankreich 14% und Italien 11%. read more

During the first four months of the year nearly 27,000 migrants and asylum seekers arrived in Greece, according to police figures, compared to 5,100 during the same period last year. Nearly half of them - 13,500 - entered in April alone, most after boarding smugglers’ boats in Turkey and heading for some of the many Aegean islands. Previously most arrived to the north Aegean islands of Lesvos, Chios and Samos and in manageable numbers. Now arrivals are being registered even in the more southerly Aegean islands such as Kos. At the time of writing there are around 500 refugees in the Detention Centre including over 20 young children. Last week the number was over 700. This is in a centre which was built to accommodate 250 people. The authorities – the coastguards, the port police, the police in general, the public prosecutor, the Mayor of Samos, are part of the problem and they comply with EU and nation state policies which are nothing less than cruel and inhumane. Three hundred refugees due to come to Ireland under the new EU quota scheme will be given integration courses in Dublin before being resettled elsewhere in the State. Ireland was given a target of 272. The European Commission’s quota proposals have yet to be approved by member states, but Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald said Ireland wanted to underline its commitment to contributing to the resettlement effort by pledging to admit the 300 extra refugees. read more
