The crew of the LE Eithne have rescued a further 647 migrants - among them eight children - from two wooden barges in the Mediterranean. Meanwhile, Ireland will replace that LE Eithne on refugee rescue duties in the Mediterranean with the LE Niamh in just over two weeks' time. Now, the Government will extend Ireland's humanitarian mission to support the Italian authorities - and will consider deploying a third ship if necessary in September. read more

Eine Gesetzesnovelle bezüglich der Verleihung der griechischen Staatsbürgerschaft an Immigranten wurde am Donnerstag im Parlament in erster Lesung und in einer namentlichen Abstimmung verabschiedet. Dafür gestimmt haben 172 Abgeordnete aus den Reihen der linken Regierungspartei SYRIZA, der liberalen „To Potami“ und der sozialistischen PASOK sowie einer der rechtspopulistischen Partei „Unabhängige Griechen“ (ANEL), Juniorpartner in der Regierung. Die restlichen ANEL-Parlamentarier sowie die Volksvertreter der konservativen Nea Dimokratia (ND) und der faschistischen Chryssi Avgi (CA) – insgesamt 91 – lehnten die Novelle ab. Vier Abgeordnete der kommunistischen KKE enthielten sich der Stimme. read more

As EU leaders and European governments struggle to find a solution to the tide of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea, a group of German volunteers have decided to take matters into their own hands by setting sail to offer assistance to those they find stranded at sea. The group, called Sea Watch, was created by German entrepreneur Harald Hoeppner and an assortment of friends and volunteers from Brandenburg. Sea Watch does not pick the migrants up itself, but provides water, food and medical assistance. read more

Italy's navy said on Monday it had begun to recover the bodies of up to 800 migrants from a fishing boat that sank in the Mediterranean three months ago, a tragedy that prompted the European Union to expand sea rescue operations. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has said he wants the vessel lifted so "the whole world (can) see what happened". Italy has accused EU governments of not pitching in enough to help manage the migrant flow. read more

Around 2,000 Yazidis who set off from Turkey's southeastern provinces with the intention of crossing into Europe were turned back at the Kapıkule border gate in the province of Edirne by gendarmes and sent back to border camps on Sunday. France‘s highest administrative court ruled Monday that the practice of conducting police checks at the country‘s borders is legal. Responding to an appeal brought by migrants associations, the court said that eliminating systematic border controls within the Schengen area does not prevent French authorities from checking documents and refusing entry. read more

Après les trois sommations ils repoussent les manifestants avec une brutalité croissante, puis commencent à gazer à bout portant. Sous une forme ou sous une autre, les Syriens sont déterminés à continuer leur mouvement. Mohammed Islam is a Rohingya Muslim who has lived in a refugee camp in Bangladesh since age 9, after his family fled religious tension in his home country of Burma, also known as Myanmar. His life is one of uncertainty coupled with despair, which has deepened in recent weeks because of a Bangladesh government proposal to move 32,000 Rohingya refugees to a remote island that swamps at high tide. “We don’t want to die,” he said in an interview. “We are already persecuted; we don’t want to suffer more.” read more
