A police raid early this morning at 6:30am led to the arrest of eight irregular migrants who were living out in the open in Hal Far, using the huge asbestos pipes that have been for years out in the nearby fields, as their shelter. Police said that the men had residence documents issued by Italian authorities and availed themselves of their right to free movement.Police said that the men had official documents issued by the Italian authorities, and had travelled to Malta via catamaran from Sicily.Since these men have no means to sustain themselves and are living rough, the Immigration Police is preparing to deport them back to the country where their residence permit was issued from. They are currently in police custody. read more

Hundreds of asylum seekers have gone on hunger strike at an Australian immigration detention center in Papua New Guinea, rights groups said this week, with some sewing their lips shut, swallowing razor blades and drinking washing powder to highlight fears for their security. Australia uses offshore detention centers in Papua New Guinea and the tiny South Pacific island nation of Nauru to process would-be refugees trying to reach the country. The refugees often arrive in unsafe boats after paying people-smugglers in Indonesia. read more

Another group forming the unaccompanied and underaged refugees. The number of fleeing girls and boys, who were taken in charge by the city of Frankfurt, increased from 351 in 2012 to 539 in the next year. Die Bemühungen der Europäischen Union zur Flüchtlingsabwehr kosten viele Menschenleben, sind aber dennoch vergeblich: Nach Angaben der EU-Kommission wurden im vergangenen Jahr 276.000 Personen bei einer unerlaubten Einreise in die EU festgestellt. Dies entspricht einer Zunahme von 138 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr. 203.000 dieser Einreisen erfolgten über das Mittelmeer. Statt für diese Menschen sichere Fluchtwege zu schaffen, will der zuständige Kommissar Dimitris Avramopoulos Schleuser noch stärker bekämpfen als bisher. read more

Libyan coast guards have rescued 27 African migrants and dozens others are still missing after their boat sank off the coast of the northwestern Zliten city, a coast guard official told media outlets on Friday. The official said that 72 migrants had been aboard the boat which sank Thursday night. The coast guards recovered nine bodies while remaining migrants are still missing at sea and their nationalities could not be identified, the official said. read more

There's already been a debate over whether to accept 15 Syrian refugee children who need urgent medical assistance. A former children’s holiday camp has become the first permanent structure for migrants in Calais since the notorious Sangatte camp was shut down after riots in 2002. Initially, the camp was made up of just three military-style tents - one for food distribution, one for storage and one with banks of plugs to let migrants charge their phones - in the car park. From March there will be overnight accommodation in the refurbished cabins for up to 500 women and children, and showers will be available in April. The authorities have vowed not to allow the centre to become a second Sangatte and said overnight acccomodation will not be extended to men at any point. read more
