In den frühen Morgenstunden nahmen Beamte der griechischen Küstenwache 98 illegale Migranten auf den drei Inseln der östlichen Ägäis fest. Sie wurden von dem militärischen Beobachtungsstand “Skandariou” über rote Lichtzeichen im Meergebiet “Labi” informiert. Sofort war ein Patroullienschiff vor Ort und nahm nahe der Küste 42 illegale Migranten fest. Außerdem wurden 19 weitere in der Gegend “Varades” von Samothraki und 37 in Inousses festgenommen. read more

Libyan coast guards have rescued 27 African migrants and dozens others are still missing after their boat sank off the coast of the northwestern Zliten city, a coast guard official told media outlets on Friday. The official said that 72 migrants had been aboard the boat which sank Thursday night. The coast guards recovered nine bodies while remaining migrants are still missing at sea and their nationalities could not be identified, the official said. read more

There's already been a debate over whether to accept 15 Syrian refugee children who need urgent medical assistance. But some in Europe want EU countries to share the burden of Syrian refugees more equally. On Wednesday morning the Czech cabinet decided unanimously to accept 15 refugee children, who are currently being treated in Jordan. “The children will be chosen according to how well we think they'll be able to integrate into Czech society, for example what religion they are,” the Inerior Minister Chovanec said. read more

A former children’s holiday camp has become the first permanent structure for migrants in Calais since the notorious Sangatte camp was shut down after riots in 2002. Initially, the camp was made up of just three military-style tents - one for food distribution, one for storage and one with banks of plugs to let migrants charge their phones - in the car park. From March there will be overnight accommodation in the refurbished cabins for up to 500 women and children, and showers will be available in April. The authorities have vowed not to allow the centre to become a second Sangatte and said overnight acccomodation will not be extended to men at any point. read more

Human traffickers continue to find new methods to take refugees to Europe. The EU's reaction is helpless, cold-hearted and not unified at all. "Europe has to get active," Avramopoulos (EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship) said. "We don't have time to lose." The responsibility lies with the member states, but each of them does their own thing when it comes to refugee policy. If there is coordinated action, it needs to cost as little as possible. The Dublin Regulation, which says that a refugee has to apply for asylum in the European country that she first sets foot in, only exists on paper. In reality, it has long collapsed. Europe needs quickly a new plan. read more

"Neither the KJND (service of emergency for children and adolescents) nor the police seem to know anything about their disposition", said the FDP politician, Finn Ole Ritter. This is unacceptable, according to Ritter. He is furthermore criticising that the accomodation, particularly the one located in the Feuerbergstraße, has not enough staff for an adequate taking-care of children and adolescents. Eine groβe Polizeiaktion mit 47 Polizisten wurden in den letzen 24 Stunden zur Auffindung illegaler Migranten in Thessaloniki durchgeführt. Es wurden Kontrollen am Flughafen Thessalonikis, am Bahnhof, an der Busstation für Überlandbusse und an anderen Ballungsgebieten der Präfektur Thessaloniki durchgeführt. Es wurden 529 Personen kontrolliert, 49 Ausländer vorgeführt und 42 von ihnen verhaftet, wegen des Besitzes und Gebrauchs gefälschter Dokumente, des Besitzes und Gebrauchs von Reisedokumenten einer anderen Person, offenen Gerichtsurteilen und illegalem Aufenthalt im Land, je nach Fall. Insbesondere wurden 99 Fahrzeuge und 6 Geschäfte kontrolliert und es wurden 5 Verstöβe wegen fehlender Gesundheitsbescheinigungen von Arbeitnehmern und fehlender Arbeitserlaubnis festgestellt. Im Besitz der Verhafteten wurden 5 gefälschte Personalausweise gefunden und beschlagnahmt, ebenso wie drei gefälschte Reisepässe, ein Reisepass, der von einem nicht rechtmäβigem Besitzer vorgelegt wurde und ein Ausweis der auch von einem nicht rechtmäβigem Besitzer vorgelegt wurde. Diese gezielten Aktionen sollen mit selbiger Intensität fortgesetzt werden. read more

The UN refugee agency has urged the international community to help alleviate the "desperate living conditions" of Syrian refugees living away from Jordan's main camps.One in six of them live in extreme poverty, a UN study says. It warned that unless the international community provided more support, the conditions of the refugees would only get worse. More and more them were relying on outside assistance, it said. The study covered the more than half a million Syrian refugees who live in urban or rural areas outside the main refugee camps of Jordan. read more

Bulgaria said on Wednesday it would extend a barbed wire fence along its border with Turkey by a further 130 km (80 miles). The United Nations' refugee agency criticised the announcement by Prime Minister Boiko Borisov, saying it would endanger more lives and increase the role of human traffickers. "This (extension) is absolutely necessary," Borisov told lawmakers. The interior ministry will prepare details for the extension, including construction deadlines, by the end of January, the government said in a statement. read more
