Australia’s High Court ruled Wednesday that the nearly month-long detention of 157 ethnic Tamils from Sri Lanka aboard a sea vessel last year was legal under the government’s Marine Powers Act. The narrow 4-3 decision means that the detainees, of whom 50 were children, will not receive damages for their alleged false imprisonment, according to the judgment summaries. read more

Calais (France): "The police here aren't nice, they're rough," said Mahamed Salemen, a 36-year-old Sudanese migrant who arrived in the northern French port city of Calais three months ago. "They hit us. They broke the leg of another migrant who lives in this camp, and my friend's hand." Salemen has tried to sneak into England 15 times already. He said he was motived by the desire "to have a good life and to study, [to have] a life without genocide, without ethnic cleansing." But Calais police have thwarted each of his attempts. A report published last week by Human Rights Watch (HRW) says that migrants in Calais "experience harassment and abuse at the hands of French police." According to the international watchdog — which based its findings on 44 witness statements collected in November and December 2014 — migrants "live in destitution," and are subject to routine beatings by the authorities. read more

The election in Greece has jolted Europe’s political landscape. Although Syriza is most famous for its pointedly populist economic program—based on resisting debt obligations, bolstering welfare programs, and reducing inequality—some migrants see hope in their more obscure immigration policy proposals. As part of their broader push for social equality, Syriza has championed policy changes such as speeding up the asylum petition process—which could help migrants secure their right to resettle and protect them from deportation; repealing the EU-wide rules restricting migrants’ travel within the region; guaranteeing human rights protections for immigrants currently in detention; promoting reunification of immigrant families (who are often separated on the grueling and dangerous journey); and overall, “Social inclusion of immigrants and equal rights protection.” It’s unclear how many, if any, of these policies will lead to actual legislative reforms. Given that Syriza just formed a dubious coalition with the Independent Greeks (ANEL, in the Greek abbreviation) an anti-immigrant right-wing party, these initiatives could quickly be neutralized or perverted by the contradictory alliance. But if we take the platform on its word, the immigration proposals open a concrete avenue for protecting immigrants’ rights, breaking from the European status quo of tightening borders, criminalizing the undocumented, and shutting out asylum seekers. read more

UK - Shadow Home Office minister David Hanson has today slammed the Government for allowing just 90 refugees from Syria to enter the UK. In under four years of civil war in the country, it is estimated that nine million people have been displaced from their homes. He also pledges that Labour would ensure more refugees of the crisis could enter the country, citing France as an example that the UK should follow. As of June last year, France had taken in 5,000 Syrian refugees. read more

Seit Beginn der Pegida-Demonstrationen im Herbst 2014 hat sich die Gewalt gegen Flüchtlinge, Migranten und ihre Unterkünfte nach Recherchen von „Report Mainz“ mehr als verdoppelt. In den drei Monaten vor dem ersten Pegida-Marsch am 20. Oktober habe es bundesweit 33 Übergriffe auf Migranten und Flüchtlinge gegeben, in den drei Monaten danach 76, berichtete das ARD-Politikmagazin am Dienstag. Das sei eine Zunahme von 130 Prozent. Die Übergriffe reichen dem Bericht zufolge von Hakenkreuzschmierereien an Flüchtlingsunterkünften bis hin zu brutalen Angriffen auf Ausländer. read more

Traffic chaos at the Channel Tunnel was a bonanza for migrants in Calais who managed to cross to the UK in high numbers over the last week, an IBTimes UK investigation has revealed. Asylum seekers encamped on the French side of the tunnel took full advantage of travel disruptions caused a by lorry fire, followed by issues to the power supply line. Dozens are believed to have completed a dangerous trip to Britain, after jumping on vehicles that queued for hours on the roads leading to the tunnel. read more

Mit groβer Intensität werden tagtäglich die Kontrollen der Zentralen Hafenbehörde in Patras fortgeführt um Migranten ausfindig zu machen die keine Reisedokumente besitzen. Gestern nachmittag wurde ein im Kofferraum eines Fahrzeugs versteckter Migrant mit seinem minderjährigen Sohn entdeckt. Ein weiterer Migrant wurde mit einem gefälschten Reisedokument beim Besteigen eines Schiffes verhaftet. Eine Migrantin die ebenfalls versuchte mit gefälschten Reisedoukumenten ein Schiff zu besteigen, wurde ebenfalls verhaftet danach aber wieder freigelassen, da sie ein minderjähriges Kind bei sich hatte und hochschwanger war. 25.01.2015 read more

Genauer gesagt, starteten zwei Helikopter AB-205 der Luftwaffe, der eine (…) um 09:19 und der andere (…) um 12:00 mit dem Ziel der Rettung von 28 illegalen Migranten von einer Felseninsel fünf Seemeilen südöstlich von den Paxi Inseln. Die Helikopter brachten 26 illegale Migranten sicher zu den Paxi Inseln und zwei nach Preveza. read more

Karlsruhe (rh) - The number of underaged refugees, who come unattended to the city, is increasing since months. To integrate these children, there are by now four refugee classes for 85 children and adolescents at the Parzival school center. But there are problems with the financing. In October last year the Parzival school had just 13 underaged refugees, now it has 85. This sudden increase means financial problems for the school. "There were a deadline for the financing: the 15th of October", explains Norbert Krumm, the manager of the Parzival school, to ka-news, "at this moment we had just 13 underaged and unattended refugees." That is why the regional council provides resources just for these refugee children. read more
