Für einige der jährlich 10.000 Menschen, die die Überfahrt von Afrika nach Europa riskieren, könnte das Projekt „Sea Watch“ die Rettung sein. Der Brandenburger Harald Höppner hat ein Schiff gekauft, um Flüchtlingen, die im Mittelmeer in Seenot geraten sind, zu retten. Mit einer kleinen Gruppe Mitstreiter ist er dabei, den Kutter in Hamburg-Finkenwerder wieder seetauglich zu machen. Unterstützung bekamen sie auch von ehemaligen "Cap Anamur"-Helfern. read more

21 Flüchtlinge sind bei einem Schiffsunglück vor der Küste Haitis in der Nacht auf Donnerstag ums Leben gekommen. Die Flüchtlinge waren demnach auf dem Weg zur Insel Providenciales, wegen der unruhigen See sei das Schiff aber auf halbem Weg umgekehrt und schließlich gekentert. It prescribes how access to and quality of the asylum procedures can be ensured and how dealings with unaccompanied minors as well as people in administrative detention must be improved. According to the agreement, Israel would deport hundreds of Eritrean and Sudanese asylum-seekers to Rwanda in return for favorable deals that include millions in grants. The asylum seekers would be expelled from Israel’s detention camps and would be granted legal immigration rights once relocated to Rwanda. Human rights defenders are heavily criticizing Israel’s plan to expel over 50,000 asylum seekers to African countries. read more

The Turkish CoastGuard has rescued 376 illegal migrants in the Aegean Sea between March 30 and April 3. Most of the migrants came from Syria, with others from African countries and Afghanistan. The African and Afghan immigrants were sent to the Turkish police for deportation. The Syrian migrants were not deported, however, because of the ongoing civil war in Syria. The Turkisch Coast Guard captured 12,872 illegal immigrants in 2014, as they were trying to cross into Greece through the Aegean Sea. read more

Push-backs at the borders, a lack of integration and discrimination against asylum seekers are continuous and the fence being built by the government at the border to Turkey will now comprise 331 km. A violent push-back at the border resulted in two refugees freezing to death after having been beaten by border police and not being able to walk back to Turkey. read more

Cameroonian refugees displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency in northern Cameroon say they are living in desperate conditions. The government confirms that UN refugee assistance is given to refugees entering Cameroon, but not internally displaced people. It states that at least 70 000 school children and 100 000 adults have been displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency. The masses of people fleeing from the insurgencies have led to a crisis comparable to the refugee situation caused by Syria's civil war and a shortfall of international funding is hampering the UN’s ability to help the situation. read more

Die Europäische Union (EU) stellt 2,5 Millionen Euro Soforthilfe für palästinensische Flüchtlinge in Syrien bereit. 18.000 Menschen im Flüchtlingslager Jarmuk sollen so dringend notwendige Unterstützung erhalten. Die humanitäre Situation der Palästinenser und Syrer in Jarmuk hat sich durch die intensiven Kämpfe im Lager dramatisch verschlechtert. Die EU-Hilfen werden über das Hilfswerk der Vereinten Nationen für Palästina-Flüchtlinge im Nahen Osten (UNRWA) ausgezahlt. read more
