Hungary will take steps to tighten its southern border with Serbia to stem the rising flow of migrants and asylum seekers, officials said Tuesday. A proposal by the governing Fidesz party would allow police at the border to turn back migrants seeking to enter the country illegally. Hungary has received more than 50,000 asylum requests so far this year, compared to 43,000 in 2014 and 2,157 in 2012. Previously, the majority of asylum seekers came from Kosovo. Since March, about 70 percent of them are from Afghanistan, Syria or Iraq. read more

Groups of tourists and locals are providing food and clothing to migrants arriving on the Greek island of Kos. The Greek island, renowned for its beaches and nightlife, is now being described as the new "frontline of Europe's asylum migrant crisis", with thousands of migrants fleeing from the Middle East making the crossing from the Turkish border, which is less than three miles away. It is estimated that around 1,500 migrants have arrived on the island in the last 10 days alone, and the arrival of thousands more are expected as the weather improves. The island's native population is 35,000. read more

“Travelling to discover the world, in search of a better way of life, to join one’s relatives, or seeking freedom… just some of the reasons that drive men, women and children to migrate.” The Migreurop network along with its Belgium member associations invite you to a private view of the exhibition Moving Beyond Borders (MBB). This exhibition, designed by the company Étrange Miroir (Strange Mirror), focuses on migrants’ journeys while pointing out the system that renders their journeys so perilous, whether crossing the Sahara, the Mediterranean or even the Eastern borders of the European Union. read more

Is there room to double the annual intake of refugees in New Zealand? Of course there is. Would New Zealand be able to resettle them well? Of course it is. The 'have we got room for more refugees' discussion of 2015 is almost a carbon copy of what we were arguing back in 1979. The mainly Vietnamese boat people of that time and land refugees from Pol Pot's Cambodia and from Laos were crowded into camps in various parts of South East Asia particularly, Thailand. More than a million people left those three countries in the years 1975 to 1979. read more

The strain of dealing with the massive wave of refugees pouring off the coast of war-torn, ISIS-threatened Libya and flowing across the Mediterranean is proving too much for Italy. Alone this year, 50.000 already arrived on italian shores. Complaints have grown so forceful that wealthy northern Italy is refusing to accept more migrants. While there is much talk on EU-level about addressing the “root cause” of the Mediterranean migrant crisis, there are few concrete suggestions for doing so. read more
