They survived enslavement, kidnapping, persecution, poverty and in some cases, sexual abuse. To them, the only light on the horizon lay just beyond the Mediterranean. They knew the journey would be long and even potentially deadly. Still, they decided to risk it all at sea— some for the sake of their children, others for a chance of their own at a future.
