The Home Office has confirmed that a failed asylum seeker who was said to be near death after a hunger strike that has lasted nearly 100 days has been deported from Britain. Muaza had been refusing food for more than three months in protest at his detention in Harmondsworth immigration removal centre, near Heathrow, and at the "unfair treatment" of his asylum claim. His removal went ahead despite attempts to obtain a last-minute injunction and a 120-strong vigil outside the Home Office. read more

Eine Gruppe syrischer Flüchtlinge war auf der Überfahrt von der türkischen Küstenstadt Burhaniye auf die griechische Insel Lesbos, als sich das Unglück ereignete. Das Boot, auf dem sich nach Angaben der Behörden 16 Menschen befanden, verunglückte unweit der türkischen Küste. Sechs Menschen ertranken, darunter ein zwei Monate altes Baby. Acht Menschen konnten von der türkischen Küstenwache gerettet werden, da ein Flüchtling einen Rettungsruf absetzen konnte und ein einheimischer Rentner auf Hilferufe aufmerksam wurde und Anzeige erstattete. Derzeit befinden sich die Überlebenden im Krankenhaus von Burhaniye in Behandlung. Die türkische Küstenwache sucht indessen nach zwei weiteren vermissten Personen, die sich nach Angaben der Flüchtlinge ebenfalls auf dem Boot befanden. (aus dem Türkischen übersetzt) read more

Each year, several thousand refugees arrive from Greece at the harbours of Venice, Ancona, Bari or Brindisi and get readmitted without individual case examination on the basis of a treaty between the two states. read more
