The choices of language is very important and the term 'illegal migrant', widely used in European states, including Greece, associates migrants with illegal acts under the criminal law. Ever since Tony Abbott was elected last September on the slogan “stop the boats,” they have been explicitly unwelcome, despite international conventions granting them the right to a fair asylum procedure. read more

In FY 2012, the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) detained a record 477,523 adult noncitizens.[1] Since the Obama Administration announced its detention reform initiative in 2009, the number of noncitizens DHS detains yearly has increased by nearly 25 percent. The increase in detention seems to stem, in part, from an even greater rise in use of summary removal processes applied to non-citizens, including asylum-seekers. read more

From the outside, the temporary shelter for Syrian civilians in Kilis, Turkey, doesn’t look like an inviting place to live. It looks like a prison. Many of the world’s displaced live in conditions striking for their wretchedness, but what is startling about Kilis is how little it resembles the refugee camp of our imagination. It is orderly, incongruously so. Residents scan a card with their fingerprints for entry, before they pass through metal detectors and run whatever items they’re carrying through an X-ray machine. Inside, it’s stark: 2,053 identical containers spread out in neat rows. No tents. None of the smells — rotting garbage, raw sewage — usually associated with human crush and lack of infrastructure. read more

Ein Kutter mit 28 Menschen an Bord wird kurz vor Erreichen der griechischen Insel Farmakonisi von der griechischen Küstenwache gestoppt und wieder auf das offene Meer geschleppt. Als der Kutter zu sinken beginnt werden die Flüchtlinge gehindert auf das Küstenwachschiff zu klettern und das Abschleppseil wird gekappt. 16 Personen können sich noch retten, 12 ertrinken in Folge der unterlassenen Hilfeleistung. Nun beschäftigt sich auch das europäische Parlament mit diesem Vorfall. read more
