Twenty-seven people believed to be migrants have been found in the back of a lorry on the A1 in Cambridgeshire. Police stopped the vehicle between Wittering and Stamford and the lorry driver was arrested on suspicion of facilitating immigration. Five were taken to hospital suffering from dehydration and the others were assessed at the scene, the ambulance service said. read more

Der Protest von syrischen Flüchtlingen vor dem Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge (BAMF) in Dortmund ist am Freitagnachmittag eskaliert, als eine Delegation der Grünen vor Ort war. Ein syrischer Flüchtling hatte eine 1-Liter-Plastikflasche geöffnet und sich den Inhalt über den Kopf geschüttet. Doch bevor er sich anzünden konnte, konnten ihn andere der 50 Demonstranten überwältigen und auf den Boden drücken. Der verzweifelte und weinende Mann wurde vor Ort von Sanitätern versorgt. Schon am Vormittag war ein anderer Flüchtling wegen der psychischen Belastung kollabiert. read more

Although far fewer migrants from Central America reach America this year, the crisis is not ebbing. The United States merely has invested heavily in security along the border, in large part to stop unlawful immigration. Yet little interest has been shown in addressing the underlying reasons Central Americans continue to head north. The United States can afford to play a bigger, more constructive role in helping Central American nations. Letting the problems fester will inevitably mean that people will keep heading north in large numbers, which will continue to drive up the cost of keeping them out. read more

The European Union is struggling with the question of what to do about hundreds of thousands of migrants flocking to its shores across the Mediterranean, often dying in the attempt. "By erecting prohibitions, we have actually created a market for smugglers," François Crépeau, the U.N. special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, says. "Prohibition breeds underground markets." Crépeau has previously suggested that rich countries should take in one million refugees over five years, while economic migrants should be offered visas that incentivize them to stay within the rules while trying to find work. read more

Britain is due to withdraw the Royal Navy’s flagship, HMS Bulwark, within the next three weeks from its role helping to rescue thousands of migrants trying to enter Europe across the Mediterranean. The ship began to take part in rescue operations, some off the coast of Libya, on 5 May. Its deployment is due to end on 5 July, and there has been no clear decision on what will happen afterwards. If there is no decision to continue Bulwark’s deployment it will mean the British contribution will be withdrawn just as the flow of migrants from north Africa risking their lives in small boats rises to a summer peak. read more

Yesterday's protest rally "No half children" in front of the interior ministry, demonstrated the faults in the dealing with anaccompanied minor refugees. The European Union’s renewed rescue operation for migrants crossing the Mediterranean has already saved over 2,900 lives in less than two months, the British Ministry of Defence says. “The Royal Navy is playing a full part in the international effort to save lives at sea”. In October last year the Government said it did not support planned search and rescue operations, stating that they encourage more migrants to come to Britain.
