The vast majority of migrants crossing the Mediterranean arrive in Greece, which accounted for more than 70 per cent of all maritime arrivals this year. The number of migrants landing in Greece has recently risen sharply as many attempt to undergo the crossing before winter. Based on information from Hellenic Police stationed on high-traffic Greek islands, the International Organization for Migration believes roughly 60,000 migrants and refugees have arrived in Greece in September alone. read more

Croatia reopened its main cargo crossing with Serbia on Friday after heated exchanges between the nations. The decision came hours after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban pledged to consult with governments in the region before moving ahead with plans to build a fence along the Croatian border. Neben der neutralen Zone zwischen Griechenland und Mazedonien, wurden bereits fünf groβe Zelte aufgestellt, in denen vorübergehen mehr als 1000 Menschen Platz finden können.Sie können sich dort für einige Stunden in dem Feldlager aufhalten, das seit heute in Funktion ist und derzeit ungefähr 200 Personen beherbergt. Es gibt dort eine Gesundheitsversorgung, an einigen Stellen wird Essen und Wasser verteilt und es gibt 24 Stunden Strom, so dass die Flüchtlinge ihre Handys aufladen können, sowie flieβendes Trinkwasser und wi-fi. Das Feldlager wird von der UHNCR betrieben unter Beteiligung der Ärzte ohne Grenzen, der Ärzte der Welt, Praxis und anderen NGOs und Freiwilligen. read more

The majority were young Afghan men and some families. A record number of at least 430,000 refugees and migrants have taken rickety boats across the Mediterranean to Europe this year, 309,000 via Greece, according to International Organization for Migration figures. Metin Corabatir at Ankara's Asylum and Migration Research Center says if Turkey offered these people asylum, the push to Europe would be smaller, but that's not going to happen anytime soon. read more

Since many Greek islands are close to the Turkish mainland, it is relativly easy to reache them by small boats. To stop the "flood of refugees", the EU considers to work together with the Turkish governement. Therefore the EU would like to move its obstacles for refugees to the south. In the worst-case scenario more people will take the dangerous route over Libya and Italy again. read more
