A 27-year-old Algerian electrician was turned back to France at the German border in Karlsruhe in June 2025 despite having filed an asylum claim. The Karlsruhe Administrative Court has now dismissed his case as inadmissible without examining whether the pushback violated EU law. His lawyer, Matthias Lehnert, said the case demonstrates that no effective legal protection exists against pushbacks at the border. read more

taz research shows the German government is planning, for the first time in years, to deport Afghans without any criminal record back to Afghanistan. A taz survey of all regional refugee councils found that at least five Afghans currently held in deportation detention have no criminal convictions or classification as a security threat, four of them in Bavaria and one in Hesse. The relevant state interior ministries are not releasing figures on this. During the most recent charter flight in mid-June, 92 federal police officers were deployed at a cost of over €350,000, and ten additional individuals have already been deported this year via scheduled flights. read more

Anyone who has already applied for asylum in another EU country must return there—Saxony intends to implement this principle by establishing a secondary migration center. Following Brandenburg and Hamburg, Saxony is now the third federal state to introduce a so-called Dublin center. Sweden is deporting young women to countries where they could face severe gender-based rights violations, Human Rights Watch said today. Media reported that in 2025, at least 92 young adults were set to be deported alone, many of them women who grew up in Sweden and have immediate family there. read more

Since June, federal states have been able to house, in centralised facilities, people whose asylum cases fall under the jurisdiction of another EU Member State or who have already been granted protection there. Saxony has had such a centre since 1 July – which, according to the state itself, is the largest in Germany. The Saxony Refugee Council describes these secondary migration centres as prison-like facilities. read more

A German court has once again ruled that the border controls with Austria ordered by Federal Interior Minister Dobrindt are unlawful. Several plaintiffs had challenged the controls, and the ruling was issued on the basis of the revised Schengen Borders Code.
