Several organizations are demanding that the support of the Libyan Coast Guard be excluded from the mandate for Irini. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul presents the EU mission Irini, in which the German navy is also involved, in the best possible light. With it, one is making a “contribution to the stabilization of one of the longest and most complex conflicts in the Mediterranean region,” said the CDU politician on Wednesday in the German parliament. Irini – in full: “Eunavfor Med Irini” – serves above all to implement and monitor between Europe and North Africa the UN arms embargo against the divided and unstable Libya. That means: to prevent arms smuggling into and oil smuggling out of the huge desert state – at least by sea. read more

Shots at rescuers, torture of migrants, mafia-like dealings: For years, reports have been piling up about the most serious human rights violations by the Libyan Coast Guard (LCG) and the militias connected with it. Nevertheless, Italy and Germany decided independently of each other on Wednesday: The cooperation continues. This is supposed to monitor the arms embargo against Libya, but as a “side task” also further build up and train the LCG. In the latter, Germany had until now explicitly not participated because of their human rights violations. “In principle, the following applies for the German government: There is no German bilateral support for the Libyan Coast Guard,” said a spokesperson of the Foreign Office still at the end of September to the taz newspaper. read more

A new NGO report highlights the bitter failure of the Rome-Tripoli migration agreement. Two camps opened in Albania since the agreement was signed, but only 130 people out of the planned 36,000 have been sent there. The reason: the contradiction between this migration policy and respect for fundamental rights. The vast majority of Italian courts oppose sending migrants to Albania. read more
