Fresh controversy has erupted about the exchange of information during migrant rescue missions between Frontex and Libyan authorities. Earlier this year, Libya's coast guard was found to have rammed a migrant boat in the Mediterranean after being alerted to its presence by a Frontex vessel. Libya has repeatedly been accused of using brute force while intercepting migrants and later taking them back ashore. read more

08.10.2026, European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE)
This article exposes how the European Union uses political pressure and threats to force North African countries into acting as gatekeepers for its borders. Specifically, the EU expects countries like Morocco and Egypt to act as guards, using threats and political pressure to enforce control. At the same time, it highlights Frontex's direct responsibility in sharing refugee boat locations with Libyan forces, sending people right back to torture and abuse. Moreover, the arrest of journalists and tragic deaths in Egyptian prisons show that official EU cooperation deals are built on ignoring state violence and human rights abuses. read more

06.10.2026, Azhar Sholgami
The article examines the severe challenges faced by Sudanese citizens following the outbreak of war, focusing on tightening global visa restrictions, systemic exclusion, and the concept of a “differential mobility regime” that enforces rigid global passport hierarchies. Through a powerful personal narrative, the author shares her displacement journey across different countries, highlighting the constant administrative obstacles, interrogations, and the psychological toll of endlessly having to prove one's right to belong and move freely in a world of closed borders. read more

In an effort to tighten EU migration controls, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Austria, and the Netherlands are pushing to establish the first operational “return hubs” by 2027. Under this proposed system, these return hubs target individuals who have no legal right to stay in the EU (such as those whose asylum applications have been rejected). However, establishing these hubs in third countries strictly requires concluding an agreement or arrangement with the respective third country. read more

The European Commission has boosted Member States' border security by allocating an additional €130 million under the Border Management and Visa Instrument (BMVI) for drone and counter-drone systems. Announced at the Justice and Home Affairs Council, this funding builds on previous allocations from late 2025 and earlier this year, bringing the total EU investment in surveillance technology to over half a billion euros. This effort is part of a broader EU action plan to utilize specialized counter-drone technologies that are designed to detect, track, and neutralize unauthorized threats to protect the EU's external borders. read more

The EU Ministers responsible for Justice and Home Affairs met for the "Home Affairs Council" on 1st and 2nd of October in Luxembourg. Greek Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris proposed to suspend the right to asylum in the EU in cases of an increase of arrivals of people on the move. The controversial measure would allow to return asylum-seekers without an individual assessment of their asylum claims, potentially resulting in collective pushbacks, which are prohibited under current EU law. read more

The Italian government has extended border controls at its air and sea borders with Spain for another 15 days. Italian Foreign Minister Piantedosi cites alleged risks to Italy’s internal security as the reason for this decision. This is already the third extension of the suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain. Italy had taken these measures after tens of thousands of migrants arrived in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta at the end of July. The reintroduction of border controls within the Schengen Area is permitted only under certain conditions, namely when a state’s internal security is particularly threatened. Since Spain and Italy do not share a land border, the controls are limited to air and sea borders. read more

Confidential talks between the EU and the Taliban on the repatriation of Afghan migrants have drawn sharp criticism. Human rights organisations are warning against giving the regime greater political legitimacy and highlighting the dangers that deported Afghans would face in their country of origin. Whilst Europe seeks to curb migration pressures, this rapprochement with the Taliban raises fundamental questions regarding human rights, international law and the EU’s future migration policy. read more
