The new EU Migration and Asylum Pact ushers in sweeping changes that undermine the right to asylum, Human Rights Watch said. Particularly alarming: the Pact threatens protection for asylum seekers with disabilities, accelerated border procedures and shortened deadlines make it even harder for vulnerable people to assert their rights. "The new EU asylum pact slams the door in the face of people who deserve to be treated with dignity and to have a fair hearing," said Judith Sunderland of Human Rights Watch. read more

The German Institute for Human Rights criticised the GEAS adaptation law for failing to use the discretion available under EU law in favour of people seeking protection — while fully exploiting all possibilities to restrict rights, making detention the rule rather than the exception. Prof. Constantin Hruschka of the Evangelical University of Freiburg described the law as "unreadable" in its drafting, calling the GEAS reform the deepest cut to German asylum law since 1993 and a massive setback for refugee protection across Europe. read more

According to the UN Refugee Agency, the number of people displaced has declined over the course of the year for the first time in a decade. As of the end of 2025, there were 117.8 million refugees and displaced persons worldwide, the UNHCR announced on Thursday in Geneva. That represents a decrease of 5.4 million men, women, and children—or four percent—compared to the end of 2024. read more

The new rules undermine the right to asylum by making it easier for governments to rush the assessment of protection claims, limit safeguards in asylum processing, and boost the prevalence and duration of detention for asylum seekers. EU countries will be able to deny people the right to apply for asylum in vaguely defined situations of mass influx or instrumentalisation of migration. The 20 percent recognition rate is an arbitrary threshold that creates a presumption that asylum seekers from particular countries are not likely to need protection, undermining the principle that each asylum seeker is entitled to an individual assessment and imposing a higher burden of proof on those against whom the presumption works read more
Human Rights Watch has published a comprehensive question and answer document explaining the key changes to EU asylum law and the risks for fundamental rights. The new rules make it easier for governments to rush asylum decisions and limit safeguards, as much of the processing will now take place under truncated border procedures. A new Crisis Regulation allows EU countries to deny the right to apply for asylum in vaguely defined situations of mass influx or instrumentalisation of migration by third countries. EU countries can now also conclude agreements with so called safe third countries outside the EU to transfer asylum seekers there. read more

The EU Asylum Pact restricts access to asylum in Europe, lowers fundamental rights guarantees for people seeking asylum and keeps those in need of protection at the EU's external borders, so ECRE in a statement published on 10 June 2026, two days before the Pact enters force. Many Member States have chosen a partial implementation approach, focusing on punitive measures and going beyond the Pact's requirements on detention, while simultaneously ignoring fundamental rights obligations and failing to invest in safeguards for children and vulnerable people. ECRE confirms that Pact implementation is proving challenging and deeply uneven across Europe. read more

As the first head of the Church ever to address the Spanish Parliament, Pope Leo XIV spoke on 8 June with flight, migration and human dignity forming a central focus of his historic address. Leo XIV. had already advised Spain's bishops in November to distance themselves clearly from the country's far right, who relentlessly attack the government's migration policy and on the Canary Islands he met displaced people in person. All parliamentary factions gave the speech a standing ovation, a rare moment of unity in a deeply divided country. read more

Pope Leo XIV is today visiting the Canary Islands as the final stop of his Spain trip, meeting migrants at the Las Raíces reception centre in Tenerife and hearing accounts of life-threatening crossings on the Atlantic route. At the port of Arguineguín, symbol of the 2020 humanitarian collapse at Europe's southern border, he lays flowers, fulfilling the posthumous wish of his predecessor Francis to commemorate the tragedy of the Canary Islands route. The visit takes place two days before the EU Asylum Pact enters force, sending a clear signal against the EU's externalisation policy. read more

To prepare for the June 2026 deadline, EU countries had to rewrite national laws to align local police, courts and immigration offices with the new EU rules. Frontline countries began hiring border guards and data entry staff, while northern countries restructured asylum housing funding. Despite the planning, many countries lack space to safely house people during border checks. The Pact requires strict screenings at the external border, but frontline states struggle to build specialised border centres fast enough, and there is a shortage of qualified asylum judges, translators and fingerprint technicians. read more

Although the European Commission drew up a Common Implementation Plan with concrete tasks for national governments, many countries lack the capacity to safely house people during the new fast-track border procedures. Frontline countries hired border guards and data entry staff while northern countries restructured asylum housing funding — yet several Member States report technical problems with biometric data registration and staffing shortages. The EUAA's new monitoring system aims to identify potential shortcomings early and prevent issues from cascading across the Common European Asylum System. read more
