On Saturday, the NGO rescue ship Humanity 1 rescued a migrant off the coast of Libya. In accordance with Italy's 2022 Code of Conduct, the ship was ordered to head for a port immediately after the rescue, which prevents it from carrying out multiple rescues per mission. This approach by the Italian government restricts NGO operations and discourages further rescues in the Mediterranean due to the high cost of covering such long distances by ship. read more

Moussa Diarra, a 26-year-old migrant from Mali, was fatally shot by a railway police officer in Verona, Italy, in controversial circumstances that are currently under investigation. Diarra fled the civil war in Mali in 2016 and endured harsh conditions in Libyan detention centres before reaching Italy. Although he was granted temporary humanitarian protection in 2017, he faced years of bureaucratic delays, leaving him in a state of constant insecurity. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged the UN Security Council to plan a civilian protection mission in Sudan, where escalating violence has displaced millions and put civilians at grave risk. Italian Minister Luca Ciriani stated that UNHCR was involved in the identification of migrants at new Italian-run centres in Albania, but UNHCR later denied this and confirmed that its role was limited to independent monitoring. According to Ciriani, identification was carried out by Italian officials and IOM staff on board a naval vessel. The European Court of Human Rights has ruled against Malta in the case of J.B. and Others v Malta, criticising the country's treatment of asylum-seeking children. The case concerned six applicants, five of them children, who were detained for 182 days in poor conditions. The investigative project 'Lost in Europe' won the Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism 2024 for uncovering the disappearance of more than 50,000 unaccompanied child migrants across Europe between 2021 and 2023. The investigation revealed that on average 47 migrant children go missing every day after arriving in Europe. The court in Crotone has ordered the release of Maysoon Majidi, a Kurdish-Iranian activist and filmmaker, who was arrested in December on charges of being an escort after a landing in Calabria. The decision came after several witnesses testified that the charges were dropped. Majidi, who fled Iran to escape persecution of the Kurdish minority, has always maintained his innocence. The final hearing of the trial is scheduled for 27 November, when she could be definitively acquitted. read more
