The European Union’s current relocation scheme for refugees is “not enough” to address the scope of the problem, the head of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Monday. International Organization for Migration said Friday that there had been a sharp increase in the number of migrants arriving in Greece, to some 7,000 a day, up from 4,500 per day at the end of September. In 2015, significant and disproportionate migratory pressure at the external borders of EU Members states like Greece and Italy and between states sharing a sea like that of Greece and Turkey have made it necessary to quickly identify and register incoming migrants. The first Greek hotspot will open its doors in 8-10 days in Mytilene, while the other four will be installed in Greece over the next month in order to make up for delays, noted Greek Deputy Minister Giannis Mouzalas. read more

Migrants have been arriving in boats to the northern coast of Lesbos Island for more than a decade, but the number has exploded from one boat a week 10 years ago to 250 a week now. Those fleeing war and poverty and desperate to reach Europe pay $1,000 to $2,000 to take the short but treacherous route between Turkey and Lesbos. Smugglers on the Turkish coast who provide the inflatable dinghies often cram 50 people into a boat with a capacity of 15, increasing the risk of capsizing. And many of the life jackets sold to the migrants are ineffective. read more
