At the moment there are about 226 religious asylums with at least 411 people, as the newspaper "Die Welt" reports with reference to the federal ecomenical association "Asylum in the Church". The Minister for the Interior, Thomas de Maizière, recently warned about an abuse of the religious asylum. He said, if courts confirm the end of a stay, then churches can not override the law. Ralf Stegner, the second-in-command of the SPD, is instead defending the practices of churches. "The churches are responsible in the handling of the religious asylum.", underlined Stegner. read more
