The Royal Navy ship sent to replace the former flagship, HMS Bulwark, on search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean a month ago has yet to rescue any migrants, the Ministry of Defence has said. A senior official in the Attica Regional Authority on Friday sent a letter to several ministries, Athens City Hall and other state services, requesting an emergency meeting next week to address how to deal with a burgeoning migrant camp in one of the capital’s biggest parks. Fears have grown about health risks as around 1,000 migrants are arriving in Athens daily and many end up sleeping in squares or parks. This crisis has not been unexpected, the IRC and others have warned that countries neighbouring conflict areas are reaching their maximum capacity to absorb any more refugees. Without legal alternative routes for refugees to enter other European countries, people fleeing conflicts in the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere have taken matters into their own hands, risking their lives to seek the sanctuary of Europe. With more people displaced by conflict globally than ever before– 59.5 million – Europe has to recognise that this problem is not going away, and that it needs to respond meaningfully to provide help. read more

The number of migrants arriving on Greek shores were up by 408 percent over the first half of 2015 compared to the same period last year. The data, compiled by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), shows that between January 1 and July 17, about 101,000 migrants arrived in Greece by sea, The Guardian reported. According to the UNHCR, nearly 60,000 of the migrants are Syrian who arrived in Greece by boat. Afghans with 20,000 arrivals, are the second most common nationality making the journey. read more

Austrian police have stopped a van crammed with 42 migrants and arrested the Romanian driver, who they say had driven them nonstop from the Serbian-Hungarian border. The migrants were locked into a 6.5 square-meter (70 square-foot) space inside the vehicle without ventilation. read more
